| TOEFL Excellencehe Reading Section of The TOEFL Exam is the first Section that you will encounter when the exam starts.  Currently — In the standard version of the exam (as opposed to The Extended Version) there will be 3 Reading Passages which are each approximately 600 – 700 Words.

| TOEFL Excellencef you have 4 Reading Passages, then you are taking The Extended Version.  You will still only be scored on three of the Reading Passages — and, unfortunately, you will not know which three you will be graded on.  (I know this sucks, because they say that they are doing this “for research purposes” — even though you did not consent to that when purchasing the exam…  But that is just the way it is for the moment.)

| TOEFL Excellenceowever — as you can see from the diagram above — after July, 2023 — The Reading Section will be considerably shorter.  There will only be 2 Reading Passages.  And since there will be NO Extended Version Of The TOEFL Exam — the time for the entire Reading Section will be about half the length that is it is currently.  The Reading Passages will still be approximately 600 – 700 Words each.

| TOEFL Excellenceor each Reading Passage — there will be 10 Questions/Tasks.  There are a total of 7 Different Question-Types, and 3 Different Task-Types.  There is a Total Possible Score Of 30 Points On The Entire Reading Section.

Notice!  —  In the past — it was possible that not all Question- & Task-Types would be represented after each Reading Passage.  However — between all of The Reading Passages in the entire Reading Section of The Exam — each of the different Question- & Task-Types will be represented at least once.
.

However  — With the “New” TOEFL (after July, 2023) — Since there are 10 *“Questions” for each Reading Passage — then each Question & Task will most-likely be represented once for each Reading Passage.
.

* (ETS & Every other TOEFL Teacher & Text-book refer to the “Tasks” as “Questions” [even though they are not].  In TOEFL Excellence we correctly refer to them as “Tasks”.  So when they say “10 Questions per Passage” they are referring to the 7 Question-Types, and 3 Task-Types.)  😉
